The United States is in flux, millions of black Americans, -and others- are looking to get out –or at least to diversify their lifestyles and domestic investments.
The exodus, Blaxit, or dual-residency, and ultimately the diversification of ‘the black American lifestyle’ has been on the uptick for over a decade now.
My affection to The Philippines dates back to, President Aquino II, who encouraged me to, initially publish a magazine showcasing the Philippines-true lifestyle, then, to visit the islands, and ultimately move at least part-time to the islands.
Also, around that time, the world witnessed a most-hospitable visit by America’s first black president, Barack Obama.
However, the success of black Americans (and other expats) in the Philippines, is evidenced a century ago. In fact, the original ‘Filipinos’ called ‘Aita’ are black and look just like (short) black Americans –imagine Kevin Heart after living 10-years on an island.
Specifically, ‘black American love’ in the Philippines dates back to the Japanese, as well as, the Spanish-American, Philippine-American Wars (1899-1902) in which many negro –or black American (Such as the Buffalo Soldier’s 9th Calvary, aka The Negro Calvary, and Philippines Black Heroes like David Fagen) soldiers, chose to stay behind, rather than return to a racist American culture.
And then, everyone remembers 1975, Muhammad Ali, Smokin’ Joe Frazier, and “Thrilla In Manila” where the world saw the Philippines hospitality and love for black Americans. Images, which changed the perspectives of black Americans back in America, as Muhammad Ali stood; with the former Philippines President Marcos, and his massively-popular and lovely wife, Emelda Marcos, and vowed to return to the Philippines.
I digress…
